Using multiple sub-streams in your assessment
Datamaran's Double Materiality module lets you create custom sub-streams within each value chain stream, so you can represent your operations with more granularity and analyse impacts, risks and opportunities more accurately.
Sub-streams break down high-level streams (for example Own Operations, Upstream, Downstream) into more specific parts of your business. You can assign custome weights to each sub-stream for more precise insights.
How to set up multiple sub-streams
- Access the Double Materiality module from the left-hand menu, and name your analysis in the Analysis name field.
- Define your value chain scope by selecting the streams relevant to your organisation. You can exclude any stream that does not apply.
- Add custom sub-streams. For each selected stream (for example Upstream), click the + icon to add a sub-stream, such as Raw Materials, Logistics, or Services.

- You can name each sub-stream individually.
- Assign different parameters or stakeholders to each one.
- Add up to 20 sub-streams per stream.
- Assign weights to streams and sub-streams. Either apply the same weight across all streams and sub-streams, or assign different weights manually to reflect their relative importance.

- Review and run your analysis. Once your parameters and weights are set, click Save & Run analysis. Your assessment includes all defined streams and sub-streams.
- Review financial and impact scores per sub-stream. In Topic Lens, switch to the Value Streams view to analyse topic scores by sub-stream.

AI-suggested IROs are generated based on the settings of each custom sub-stream. The IRO modal shows the sub-stream it relates to and lets you tag multiple sub-streams when needed.
Note: sub-streams work the same whichever materiality path a topic is on. For a topic concluded top-down, its IROs are not scored individually, but the sub-stream setup still shapes the topic scores and IRO generation.
