Topic Screening in the Double Materiality Analysis

[Double Materiality module]

Understanding topic score results

Once you run your Double Materiality Analysis (DMA), the platform will generate a long list of topics. These are presented in two different formats:

Tornado View

This view explores and assesses topics based on the available sourced evidence. Click on any topic to dive into the underlying data and sources. If a topic shows higher or lower evidence of being relevant to your organization, you can add notes to support the refinement process.

Value Streams View

This view weighs the relevance of topics at the value stream level. Similar to Tornado, you can click on the Financial or Impact side of each topic to view a detailed breakdown.

Topic screening

We recommend refining the DMA's longlist to a shortlist by discarding those topics not relevant to your operations and value chain using the Topic Screening feature.

Within the Topic screening popup, you can exclude topics showing lower evidence of potential material IROs from those with higher evidence using the probability filters:

Low -, Low, Medium, High, and High +.

Use the sliding scale to set the probability cap, or manually enter a value between 0.01 (Low -) and 1 (High +).
This filter can be adjusted at any time.

Longlist Division

The longlist is automatically divided into two groups based on the selected probability cap:

Included

Topics above the cap will be included in the following stages of the Double materiality assessment: IRO identification and assessment.

After applying the materiality threshold, IROs mapped to these topics will be validated as material or not.

Excluded

Topics below the cap are excluded. You’ll be prompted to add a rationale in the Topic Screening popup. This step supports best reporting practices and enhances future audit trails.

Manual Inclusion or Exclusion

If a topic is known to be relevant to your organization but falls below the cap, you can manually include it via the Notes feature to ensure it appears in the topic shortlist.
Similarly, you can exclude a topic above the cap by manually setting its classification to Excluded.

To update a topic's status:

  • Click the topic to open its detailed view.
  • In the upper-right corner, select Included or Excluded from the dropdown menu.

If a topic is hidden due to falling below the cap:

  • Click the Topic Screening button to reveal excluded topics.
  • Select the desired topic and update its classification via the Notes feature in its deep-dive view.

Next step

The curated list of included topics sets the foundation for the next step: IRO identification, assessment, and validation.

You can export the complete list of topics—along with scores, sources, and stream breakdown—by clicking the three-dot menu and selecting Exports → Topic Scoring Export.
